Sprit Driven

Some days, the whole "Jesus take the wheel" idea hits home.

I tried to follow my own way today.

I had to take care of some things this morning that delayed my regular writing routine.

It was the first day in a long time that it happened.

Pretty soon, I found myself overcome with anxiety and stress as the weight of the problems of life started piling up.

I know you know what I'm talking about.

Unknowingly, the pressure started building.

I tried to clench and control everything and everyone around me.

I tried to worry my way through.

I tried to find a quick fix.

I searched my own mind for the instructions or directions but found myself right back where I started in this panicky, unsettled, out-of-control feeling.

So, out came an exasperated cry, "That's it, Jesus, You do it - let's what you got."

"Finally." I'm guessing Jesus said.

After I wiped my tears of exhaustion, I imagined myself crawling in the backseat of an old car with a nice long bench seat and resting.

Resting.

Not backseat driving.

Not asking where we are going, when we will get there, or how we will get there.

Just resting.

Whew, that's better.

That tiny cry for help rewired my mind and returned me to my senses as I slowly ungripped the wheel, wringing out my cramped hands.

All the troubles and trials of life didn't miraculously disappear, but I was able to rest for a while and receive God's love and assurance that He is with me and always willing to take over when I am ready to give up the wheel.

What a relief to unclench the wheel of a self-driven life.

What a gift to know that God is ready, willing, and more than able to step in and take control.

If we are to follow forward, my fellow traveler, there will be times when we don't know why stuff is happening, when it will stop (or start) happening, or what stuff will happen next.

God offers us rest when we allow our lives to be Spirit-driven.

I know it's not easy.

Believe me, I like to be in charge and white-knuckle-grasp that wheel so I know what's going on.

But the truth is, I don't.

Sometimes, following forward means we gotta just sit back, rest, and wait as we watch God do what only God can do.

So, Jesus, I'm just gonna be chilling back here in the back seat.

If you want to put on some soothing Yacht rock on the radio while You take us where you think is best, that would be great!

Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Proverbs 16:9

A man's mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], but the Lord directs his steps and establishes them.

Philippians 4: 6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
