Worthy of Your Time

Hello again from my desk located at Hypocrisy Central.

Everything I am writing today is what I need to read because I'll tell you, this focus and attention thing is a challenge for me!

As I've been sitting here, hands at the ready to share some profound pontifications, I have reached for my phone so many times to check emails, social media, or watch some reels; it's ridiculous.

The algorithm pulls me in, and boom, dopamine rises as I laugh at some guy falling in a bush.

Time flies, and I look up. UGH - 30 minutes already?

I know.,.I know…FOCUS!

I should write a list of things I need to do today.

Or perhaps I need another cup of coffee.

Maybe I should switch the laundry.

Shoot, I have to get ready for that meeting I haven't gotten ready for yet, which starts in 14 minutes.

Oh, look, another funny reel...

Oops.

I can waste so much time focusing on things that are not useful which distract me from the task at hand.

All in the name of what? Relaxation? Entertainment? Boredom? Fear?

Being a lazy-poo-slothy-pants?

I could go on and on about all the ways I waste - literally waste - time doing things that are either useless or harmful with the precious moments God has allotted for me in this life.

I KNOW I am not alone in the struggle.

As we focus (see what I did there?) on the idea of worthiness on our journey, what if we consider what is worthy of our time and attention?

Let's make a worthy to-do list.

That feels different than prioritizing.

Worthy-izing our time and attention can help us focus on what matters most to our mind, body, and soul.

God has great plans for our lives, and I'm going to guess that 80% of what we spend our time on won't get us where He wants us to go.

  • Is it worth spending your fleeting time on this earth playing another game on your phone?

  • Is it worth the price of hours of your life starting another show to binge?

  • Is it worth giving away your attention watching strangers on a small screen live their lives while you sit and become one with your couch ignoring the real world that is happening around you?

  • Is it worth your time absorbing entertainment that isn't good for your mind, heart, or soul?

OR

  • Is it worth putting your phone down and spending time with those you love?

  • Is it worth your time improving your health so you can live a long and strong life?

  • Is it a good investment to use your time to improve your skills to finally accomplish the goals God set on your heart all those years ago?

  • Is it worth your time to go out into the world and have fun adventures with people who vibe with?

  • Is it worth time caring for others and serving those in need so that you can make the world a better place for someone else?

  • Is it worth spending time with God and absorbing inspirational and good things that challenge and motivate you?

What if we were born with a timer and we knew how many years, months, days, hours and minutes we had left?

Would that change what we do with our time and attention?

Watching that time move by so fast, would we be so careful to spend those moments only on the most important things worthy of our focus?

Only you can answer these questions for yourself.

All I can say is this.

Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.

Tick tock, my fellow distracted slothy-poo, we better get moving and live the life God dreamed for us.

Let's write our WTDL (Worthy To Do LIST) and get to work.

Who's with me?

Proverbs 4:20-25

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.

Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.

Psalm 139: 23-24

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

1 Peter 5: 8-9

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
