Mind the Gap

So many of us are sitting smack dab in the middle.

Between here and there.

We aren't where we were (thank God) and haven't moved into "what's next" yet.

We are ready and waiting.

Any minute now…

Still waiting…

We are in a bit of a holding pattern during this interlude.

These moments of intermission in life make us itchy.

We want to rush through and figure it all out asap. I mean, after all, tick-tock, am I right?

But perhaps this time is God's reminder to Mind the Gap.

No, I'm not talking about the space between the train and the platform in the London Underground; I'm talking about the gaps that we feel while in between.

Minding the gap between here and there can give us time to hunker down with God and heal.

Quietness in the gap can give us the clarity within the calm that we need to process all that has happened, release what we need to, learn what we can, and use our new skills for what comes next.

As I write this, I look out the window, and the clouds are going by super fast. It looks like someone pressed the fast-forward button. I would take a picture to show you, but my windows are dirty and it’s too cold to go outside.

The speedy clouds remind me of how we are in our lives.

We rush to the next thing, hurrying past the pauses we encounter to get where we are going.

We watch other people speeding along doing all the great things, and we want to rush up to them and crush it too. We wonder what's taking so long.

But God is beckoning us to slow down and mind the gap.

Enjoy the moment for a moment.

It's funny. I just looked out the window, and the clouds stopped racing by and are now chilling in their puffy cuteness.

Let's follow their lead (not that I’m saying we are puffy).

Enjoy the gap time, get cozy, cuddle up with God, rest up, and let Him give you the restoration you need.

Let the worries and wonderings go, and enjoy the love and rejuvenation.

This reminds me of the poem I wrote when my kids were little and felt anxious or restless:

"Don't worry about what's happening next; enjoy what's happening now.

Don't worry about what might happen; trust God, He's in control anyhow."

Be grateful for the gaps, let them revive you, and give you the healing and restoration you need to follow God in what's coming next!

Thank You, God, for this beautiful life you have given us.

Psalm 46:10

He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth."

Matthew 11:28-30

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Psalm 37:7

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
