One Page at a Time

Many of us have an area in the library of our memories called "The Grudge Section."

Here, we hold our deep-seated recollections of every wrong done and mistake made.

When someone hurts us, we head up to that dark and dusty section, pull out the book with their name on it, and begin logging this new offense.

"I'm not likely to forget this one," we tell ourselves smugly as we slam the book shut, coughing from the dust as we replace it on the shelves.

Sometimes, the research librarian within us sure makes forgiveness difficult.

Sure, we can forgive them for this thing, but what about that and that, and oh boy, what about that doozie?

Should we list all these wrongs alphabetically or chronologically? So many options.

When faced with forgiving someone, we give a tiny morsel of forgiveness instead of offering total absolution.

We rip out the one page for that specific violation and put their old, dusty book of grudges back on the shelf.

God is wanting something more from us.

He wants us to forgive them completely. Every page torn out, and every sin forgiven.

It can be a long and daunting process, especially for those old books nestled way back in the Grudge section.

The words written on those pages cut deep, and it can be overwhelming to try and speed-read through everything in the hope of fast and furious forgiveness.

So go slow, my friend. When the memories flood in and the pain and resentment return, Jesus can help you through it. Sit with Him and show him the pages.

Jesus will sit with you and soften the pain as He helps you find mercy and forgiveness.

He is with you, no matter how long it takes and how many times you need to forgive.

One page at a time if you need it.

Are you ready to clear some clutter in that Grudge section and make room for that newly renovated "Mercy, Love and Forgiveness" section?

It feels more airy and light in here already.

Matthew 18:21-22

Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times."

Hebrews 8:12

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.

Ephesians 4:31-32

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Leviticus 19:18

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself
