The Culture of Never Enough

It's nice to have nice things. But it never feels like enough, does it?

As soon as I buy the latest and greatest gadget, I'm onto the next item I simply can't live without.

Our culture keeps us wanting more and more and more - it's just never enough.

It's the grandest illusion we have fallen for. We look at what they have, what they are selling and listen when they tell us we need this or that.

We are hooked!

It's interesting that of all the commandments God could have chosen to help guide our lives, “thou shall not covet” made the list. That should tell us something.

Never have I ever been to a funeral and heard,

"George sure had some nice cookware, I'll say that for him. Did you notice he always had the newest iPhone? What an awesome early adopter that guy was!"

It’s a funny thought, but it rings a bit true in how we perceive the value of things.

We tell ourselves that we really need the stuff George has. But, do we?

We tell ourselves George is crushing life because of all the things he has, but is that what’s really most important?

Perhaps, before we make that next purchase, we could stop and ask ourselves why. Do we really need it? Really?

It will not fill our hearts or souls. The stuff will never be enough.

Let us turn our thoughts of trinkets and scroll shopping into acts of service and kindness.

We can leave a legacy of generosity and selflessness, for that will be enough.

Luke 12:15

Speaking to the people, he went on, "Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot."

1 Timothy 6:10-11

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
